McCAIN MYTH BUSTERS – 6/9

Myths about McCain Busted:
– McCain would run a transparent government as president.
– He will bring change to America.
– He will stand up for Louisiana’s farmers.
– He is able to admit when he’s wrong.

1. DNC VIDEO: JOHN MCCAIN’S LOBBYIST FRIENDS
A new DNC video highlights John McCain’s hypocrisy on lobbying reform and transparency. It shows the degree to which McCain’s inner circle has been dominated by the sort of Washington lobbyists he once railed against and the disturbing array of foreign clients they have represented– including companies doing business in Iran, the brutal authoritarian regime in Myanmar, and some of history’s most thuggish tyrants.

2. MUST READ: MCCAIN FLIP-FLOPS, ADOPTS ANOTHER BUSH POSITION
This week, John McCain again reversed himself to pander to the right wing of his Party by adopting yet another Bush policy. According to the New York Times, legal specialists say the McCain campaign recently outlined a new policy on “surveillance and executive power” that “contrasted with statements Mr. McCain previously made about the limits of presidential power.”

3. MCCAIN LESS THAN FORTHCOMING ON TRANSPARENCY
During an event in Florida this week, Senator McCain continued his double talk on transparency and lobbying reform. He bragged about allowing reporters on the campaign bus, but failed to explain why he bars the media from all of his fundraisers. He also continued to claim to be a reformer, saying he has always “put the American people first.” In fact, time and time again, John McCain has intervened on behalf of donors and lobbyists with business before his committees.

4. MCCAIN: FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG ON THE ECONOMY
New economic indicators revealed the jobless claims reached a 22 year high, and that the American economy has lost jobs every month this year. Yet, in the face of months of worsening economic indicators, John McCain continues to echo President Bush’s claim that the fundamentals of the American economy are strong in just about every public event. As recently as April, McCain even claimed that the American people are better off than they were eight years ago.

5. MCCAIN’S KATRINA DECEPTION REVEALS PATTERN OF DISTORTIONS
During his media availability in Baton Rouge this week, John McCain told reporters that he “supported every investigation” into what went wrong during Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately for the people of Louisiana, that is just not true. John McCain voted TWICE to oppose a Congressional commission to examine the federal, state, and local response to the disaster: once in September 2005 and again in February 2006.

6. MCCAIN MYTHBUSTERS: John McCain and Transparency in Governance, “Change”, Louisiana’s Farmers, and The Truth
After casting himself as a “Maverick” in 2000, the new John McCain is walking in lockstep with President Bush, pandering to the right wing of the Republican Party, and embracing the ideology he once denounced. On the campaign trail McCain has callously abandoned many of his previously held positions, even contradicted himself, in a blatant attempt to remake himself into a candidate Republicans can accept in 2008. So just who is the real John McCain? The DNC presented a daily fact aimed at exposing the man behind the myth.
